Everything Jimmy did suggested he had no intention of belonging to the place [Hollywood]. He shied away from social convention, from manners, because they suggested disguise. He wanted his self to be naked. - Nick Ray

The person Jamie was looking for within himself he liked. Even though he hadn’t gotten to know that person, I think he really and truly did like him and he was very curious, very keen to bring that person to the fore. He liked acting because within it he found all sorts of facades inside of himself, and he was fascinated by them. But actually as far as being interested in the real value of Jamie, I have never found anybody around him that was that interested. Maybe they thought they were, but they never actually opened themselves up to get him to come out. If you want to know someone you have to open yourself up in order to bring that person in, to allow that person to exercise what he or she wants. - Eartha Kitt on James Dean, photograph by Dennis Stock, 1955.
